These are two general questions for the board. Maybe it'll get some of you talking. What are you reading? What contemporary or past poetry do any of you read? Second question: what is your process like? Are you guys typing your poetry straight into the computer? Do you start longhand in a journal? What do you do when you write a poem? Answers about prose are more than welcome also.

I read a bit of everything I suppose. Some more contemporary artists such as Lord Byron, but some other modern lesser knowns that I have read in some compilation books.
I dont read often enough, or all that I can, but I enjoy good poetry now and again.

As for my writing styles, just depends. Sometimes when I have an urge, a friend taught me to speak into a tiny tape recorder that I carry around sometimes...(machinery)
But if I have the time, I write them out... the time or the means, but sometimes they come to me as I sit... right here at this very desk, pondering things...
how about yoU? *glad to have you posting btw*

I start everything longhand. I've carried a journal everywhere I go for years. I've recently started carrying a phrase book that's more easily accessible so I can jot down a new word combination, phrase, snatch of dialog in case one should present itself. Everything is finished longhand then typed as part of the editing process. If a piece is particularly recalcitrant, I will write it out longhand again and try to fix whatever's not working. I always take a two-week "cooling off" period before intense revision in order to distance myself from a work and better see it with an eye toward revision. I find the workshop process absolutely indespensible--especially for prose.

Oh yeah, I mainly read T.S. Eliot, W.S. Merwin, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Wynelle Bridge, Chuck Pahlaniuk, Gene Wolfe, and too many other short story authors to list. Right now, I'm reading As I Lay Dying for the third time in a row.

I love e.e. cummings; read a lot more in high school though.

I have no discipline when it comes to poetry, and I'm a very bad editor. When something finally does come to me, I rarely wait on it and either post or record it immediately in some fashion. I've been trying out the whole spontaneity thing, to see if it actually jump starts my writing again (I haven't seriously been writing anything for about two years). Other than that, long hand is necessary, but I'm also bad about keeping a specific book for that. I have a pile of paper scraps torn out of school notes, etc., from when things came to me during class or work...
so, yeah, in other words, the encouragement on the coffee poem was REALLY encouraging; I've been so lax about writing for so long that this is really the only place that makes me nervous when I post.

I love Dickinson. I think she's a premiere poet, and, if it's possible, underrated. Robert Frost is also another good one. The thing is, I've been trained for years to do this. Prose is my main thing, but I have a very methodical approach to both poetry and prose that still preserves that spontenaiety in the form of freewrites.
